ADRIAN, Mich.--In a battle of top-five nationally ranked teams and a rematch of the 2016 American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I women's hockey national tournament semifinals, No. 4 Adrian College swept third-ranked Grand Valley State over the weekend.
Kirsten LaBelle scored both Adrian goals on Friday night as the Bulldogs upended the Lakers, 2-1, in Allendale at Georgetown Arena.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first period as LaBelle scored her first of the season with an assist from newcomer Britt Levasseur.
The score would remain the same until late in the third period, when LaBelle would score a critical insurance marker with 6 minutes and 14 seconds remaining with an assist from Sabrena Camp. Megyn Beebe gave Grand Valley a chance late, breaking up the shutout with 2:12 left in the game, but the Bulldogs were able to hold the Lakers off the scoreboard to earn the road win.
Alison Dungey earned the win in the Adrian net, making 24 saves to match the 24 of Grand Valley goaltender Lauren Allen, who took the loss for the Lakers.
On Saturday night, Adrian returned home to Arrington Ice Arena to resume the weekend series with Grand Valley. The Bulldogs scored three unanswered goals and shut down the GVSU offense by holding the Lakers to just 19 shots in a 3-0 victory to sweep the two-game weekend series.
Dungey earned her second win in as many nights, shutting out the Lakers on 19 saves.
Jess Harrington scored the only goal the Bulldogs would need on the power play in the first period with an assist from Jessica Fabbro. Adrian would score twice in the second period as Jessie Rushing scored her first of the season with helpers from Levasseur and Nicole Paradis. Fabbro scored Adrian’s final goal with an assist from Kaillie Hardy, as the Bulldogs outshot the Lakers 39-19.
Adrian will now look forward to a weekend series against the Davenport Panthers, traveling to Grand Rapids on Friday night before returning to Arrington Ice Arena for game two on Saturday. Puck drop on Friday night will be 8 p.m., while Saturday’s game in Adrian begins at 7 p.m.
