ADRIAN, Mich.--The 2016-17 Adrian College American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I women's hockey team took the ice for the first time on Friday night and dropped a 3-0 decision to the visiting Hamilton Hawks in an exhibition game at Arrington Ice Arena.
The Hawks scored all three of their goals in period number one, and then relied on solid goaltending from Anna Costanzo to earn the victory.
Hamilton’s Rebecca Dewilde opened the scoring just 37 seconds after the drop of the puck on a breakaway from Nikki McDonald to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Dewilde then set up Ashley Sanelli for the Hawks second goal, and Casey Griffiths scored the Hawks third goal with a helper from Camielle Mio, as Hamilton took a 3-0 lead into the locker room at the first intermission.
Defense dominated the rest of the contest, especially for Hamilton, as Costanzo made 41 saves, with the Bulldogs outshooting the Hawks 41-22 for the contest. The Bulldogs used a different goaltender each period in the exhibition contest, as starter Kalysta Coulter made five saves, Katetlyn Tomlian had six and Dana Columbo stopped eight Hawks shots in the final stanza.
The Bulldogs will play one more exhibition contest next Saturday (4 p.m.) against Windsor at Arrington Ice Arena before starting their regular-season slate with a home-and-home series against Grand Valley on Friday, October 14, in Allendale and concluding on Saturday, October 15, back at Arrington Ice Arena.
