ADRIAN, Mich.--The second-ranked Adrian College ACHA Division 1 women’s hockey team used a six-goal second period outburst to break open a close game and cruise past No. 4 Miami-Ohio, 8-0, on Friday night at Arrington Ice Arena in the opening of a two-game series with the Red Hawks.
Adrian scored the only goal of the first period when Kirstin Labell converted in front of the Miami net on a beautiful setup from Courtney Hoke.
Adrian made the score 2-0 just 2:22 into the second period, as Britt Lavasseur scored on the power play with assists from Tara Wrbelis and Kaillie Hardy.
Adrian’s third goal was also a power play marker, scored by Nicole Paradis and would set off a stretch in which Adrian would score five times in the next six minutes to bust the game wide open. Paradis would score twice during that stretch as would Danica Polson, while Olivia Pollari would also add to the barrage.
Hardy would add a third Adrian power play goal as the only score of the third period to make the final score 8-0.
Wrbelis led the Bulldogs with three assists on the evening, while Adrian received two assists form Hoke, Hardy and Maegan Coleman.
Adrian goaltender Alison Dungy was superb in the Bulldog cage, turning away 28 Miami shots in earning the shutout to push her record to 7-0-1 on the season. Miami used a pair of goaltenders in starter Erin Sparks, who was replaced by Rachel Damrath, with each netminder surrendering four goals. Sparks made 19 saves before departing and Damrath added 17 stops for Miami.
Adrian’s record now stands at 9-0-1 while Miami falls to 6-4. The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 3:00 o’clock at Arrington Ice Arena.
