ADRIAN, Mich. – The Bulldog baseball team scored early and then stymied the Heidelberg bats in an 8-1 win over the Student Princes on Friday in their home opener. Junior Sam Fischer went 4-for-5 in the leadoff spot with three singles and a triple and six Bulldog hurlers limited the 14th-ranked (ABCA) Student Princes to one run on five hits.
Starter Cory Fox threw the first two innings and picked up the win after Adrian scored three times in the first and once more in the second. Fox allowed one hit and struck out one while lowering his season ERA to 0.60. Jeff Davis had a solid three innings of relief allowing just one base runner (error) in 10 faced.
In the first inning, Adrian scored three runs on three hits. Jamey Sackett had an RBI single scoring the first run. Dom Pompey hit a sacrifice fly to plate the second run and Zach Kolvey's RBI double with two outs on a 3-2 count gave Adrian a 3-0 lead.
Adrian's fourth run came in the second inning as Dan Heatherly had an RBI groundout against Heidelberg's second pitcher Teddy Lowe. Adrian finished the scoring with four runs on four hits in the third inning to take an 8-1 lead. Anthony Sergi had an RBI single and then Taylor Milligan hustled down the line to beat out a double play to gain an RBI and keep the inning alive. Fischer tripled to right center and Garrett Green doubled down the left field line to score Fischer with the eighth run.
Adrian evened its record at 4-4 and have won back-to-back games. The team will play Ohio Wesleyan on the road tomorrow in a single nine-inning game starting at 2 p.m.
