INDIANAPOLIS--The Adrian College baseball team is tied for fifth in the first NCAA Division III Mideast Region rankings, published on the NCAA.com website Thursday. The Bulldogs, who have a 23-8 in-division record and are 24-8 overall, are tied with Washington & Jefferson College (21-7, 23-7)--which will host the regional tournament next month.
Adrian--which is 16-2 in its last 18 outings--will seek to extend its four-game winning streak this weekend against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent Trine University on Friday (at Trine, 2/4:30 p.m.) and Saturday (at Adrian's Nicolay Field, 1/3:30 p.m.) to close the month of April.
The top four Mideast teams in the season debut of the regional rankings are Wooster, La Roche, DePauw and Denison. The NCAA will conduct three more regional polls on May 4, May 11 and May 14 (championship selections).
The regional rankings are used to determine the 56-team field for the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship, which will take place from Thursday-Monday, May 18-22, at eight regional sites across the nation. Six or eight of the best teams from the Mideast will descend at W&J's Ross Memorial Park for the third year in a row for the right to qualify for the Division III World Series in Appleton, Wis.
The Bulldogs, who are also receiving votes in both national polls, boast one of the NCAA's most well-rounded clubs: offensively--8th with .347 batting average, 14th with .425 on-base percentage, 25th with .471 slugging percentage, 30th with 7.9 runs per game; defensively--18th with 1.00 double plays per game, 43rd with .966 fielding percentage; and pitching--14th with five shutout, 35th with 3.48 earned-run average.
