Ian Mikowski Sets Adrian Single-Season Hits Record as Top-Seeded Bulldogs Roll Calvin, 8-2

ADRIAN, Mich.--Senior Ian Mikowski went 4-for-4 as part of a record-setting evening to pace an Adrian College 12-hit attack, and junior Tommy Parsons pitched 8-1/3 strong innings, as the host Bulldogs opened the 2017 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Baseball Tournament with an 8-2 victory over Calvin College on Wednesday.

THE BASICS
= Final Scoreline: Adrian 8-12-1; Calvin 2-7-0

TOP 'DAWGS
= Parsons improved to 10-1 on the season after striking out 12 in 8-1/3 innings. He scattered six singles, allowed two runs (1 earned) and walked only one.

= Mikowski's (3 runs scored) perfection at the plate included a walk and a double to give him 74 hits on the season, breaking the previous school record held by Alex Cowart who 71 in 2009 and 2010. 

= Freshman Tristin Richardson went 3-for-5 with a run batted in.

= Sophomore Dugan Darnell had three RBI on a groundout and two-run single.

= Senior Ryan Dorow scored three runs and walked three times.

THE OPPOSITION
Mike Kempton and Logan Marshall both had two hits. Marshall added a RBI.

Sam Schellenberg was 1-for-2 with a RBI off the bench.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Dorow gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a RBI-single through the right side. Mikowski led off with a walk and then stole second base before he moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice.

= Adrian got three insurance runs in the fifth when Darnell had a RBI-groundout to the pitcher, junior Brian Guck (2 RBI on the night) hit a sacrifice fly to left and Richardson singled to center to bring home another tally.

= Losing 5-0, Calvin got on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth. Marshall led off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Schellenberg singled off a diving Dorow's glove and Marshall scored the unearned run as the ball went into shallow center field.

= Adrian, however, had an answer in its home half with three more runs to increase its cushion to 8-1. Darnell sparked it with a single through the right side to plate a pair of runs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Adrian is ranked third in the second (May 4) NCAA Division III Mideast Region Rankings.

= Senior Brian Killinger tied a NCAA Division III record with three sacrifice bunts in today's contest. According to the 2017 Record Book, it's been done twice before with the last time being on April 28, 2013 by Ryan Penaflor, Grinnell vs. Coe.

= Killinger also has a conference-leading 14 sacrifice bunts on the season to claim sole possession of first place on the Adrian all-time chart.

= Mikowski also had three stolen bases to take the MIAA lead with 36 this spring.

= Parsons has set career highs this season with 10 wins (against one loss) and 91 strikeouts, both leading the conference.

= He also moved past Rylie Robinson (160, 2011-14) for sixth place on the Bulldogs career strikeouts list with 169. Eric Schmidt is fifth with 171 from 2012-15.

UP NEXT
= Adrian will play defending MIAA tournament champion Kalamazoo College (an 8-7 winner in 10 innings over Hope College in tonight's Game 2) at noon Wednesday in Game 3.
