FREELAND, Mich.--The Adrian College baseball team is predicted to repeat as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion in 2018, according to the coaches' preseason poll released by the MIAA office on Friday. The Bulldogs received seven of eight first-place votes from the MIAA's eight head coaches among a conference-best seven points.

Hope was a distant 14 points while earning the other first-place vote for second place, followed by Kalamazoo, Calvin, Trine, Albion, Alma and Olivet.

Adrian is undergoing workouts in preparation for it to take the field for its 25th season under the eye of Craig Rainey '89, who has piloted the Bulldogs to a career record of 619-401 for a .607 winning percentage while claiming 16 MIAA regular-season and tournament championships and appearing in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship 11 times. In conference games only, Rainey is 427-165 (.721) during his AC tenure. The team opens the 2018 campaign on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Huntingdon College, with a matchup against Birmingham-Southern College following the very next day (March 1).

The Bulldogs enter with a national ranking of 39th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason coaches' poll, as CBN also features a quarter of AC student-athletes who made the organization's Players to Watch list, a defacto preseason All-America team, including senior right-handed pitcher Tommy Parsons (New Albany, Ohio), junior right-hander Jason Schroeder (Kimball Twp., Mich./Marysville High School), sophomore righty Pierce Banks (Sterling Heights, Mich./Parkway Christian HS) and senior first baseman Hunter Hayes (Adrian High School). Adrian also is receiving votes in the D3baseball.com Top-25 preseason poll with 25 points.

Adrian returns six defensive starters in the lineup, plus three MIAA-starting pitchers, among 30 lettermen from last season's team that finished 34-13 overall (10th 30-win season in a row) and 23-5 in the MIAA, captured a conference-record ninth-straight MIAA championship and gained their 11th NCAA tournament bid in program history.
