Baseball Crowns Nationally-Ranked Student Princes Behind 19-Hit Attack, 15-2

ADRIAN, Mich.--Junior Zack Zschering tied a school record with five hits and had four runs batted in to pace a 19-hit attack as host Adrian crushed nationally-ranked Heidelberg, 15-2, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday evening.

TOP 'DAWGS
= Zschering had five hits, including a triple, and drove in four runs on three singles and a triple.

= Sophomore Brady Wood had a career day by going 4-for-6 at the plate, with three runs scored and a RBI.

= Classmates Gunner Rainey and Tristin Richardson also had a multiple-hit day with two apiece. Rainey had a double and added three RBI.

= Junior Jason Schroeder pitched three effective innings in relief to get the victory (W, 1-1). He did not allow any runs or hits while walking three. He struck out four Student Princes.  

THE OPPOSITION
= Justin DeWitt, Zach Cleaver and Charles Bova each hit a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Adrian quickly erased a 1-0 deficit in the second inning with three runs in the home half. Sean O'Keefe flied out to center field for a sacrifice fly to even the score 1-1. Zschering followed with a RBI-single through the left side, and Rainey had what proved to be the game-winning RBI with an infield single to shortstop.

= The Bulldogs blew the game open with five runs in the bottom of the next inning. Junior Nick Bell started it with a RBI-double and Rainey later had a two-run double to make it 7-1 at the time.

= In the sixth inning, junior Chad Paddock hit a double to left-center field with the bases loaded that scored all three runners for a commanding 13-2 lead.

= Kyle Slovick scored on a wild pitch to give the Berg a shortlived 1-0 advantage.

= Adrian outhit HU 19 to five. The Berg had nine runners left on base.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= The Bulldogs are now 3-0 against nationally-ranked opponents this season.

= The 15 runs and 19 hits produced by the AC offense today are season highs. The Bulldogs also set season bests for total bases (25) and extra-base hits (5).

= Before tonight, Brian Killinger was the last Bulldog to get five hits in a game versus Marietta College on March 17, 2017. In recorded AC history, this has happened only two other times.

= Adrian and the Berg first began playing each other in 1990, and the teams have alternated wins the last six games. The Student Princes lead the all-time series 20-15, including last year's 3-0 in Tiffin, Ohio. The Bulldogs improve to 9-6 lifetime at home against HU.

= Dating back to 2017, Adrian has won four-straight games at home.

= After tonight's hitting display, Zschering moves into the top-4 in conference batting with an Adrian-best .431 average. His .525 on-base percentage also ranks third in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

= As a team, Adrian now leads the MIAA with a .410 on-base average and .399 slugging percentage while ranking second in batting at .307.
