No. 12/13 Baseball Settles for MIAA Doubleheader Split with Kalamazoo

ADRIAN, Mich.--Adrian defeated visiting Kalamazoo behind a strong pitching performance from sophomore Mo Hanley in Game 1 by a 6-2 score before the Hornets' pitching turned the tables by pinning a 9-4 nightcap loss on the Bulldogs during a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader on Tuesday evening.

TOP 'DAWGS
= Hanley improved to 3-0 after throwing a seven-inning complete game with six strikeouts. He allowed two runs, four hits and worked around four walks.

= Junior Brady Wood went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in during the opener, then added another hit and RBI in the second game.

= At the top of the batting order, senior Zack Zschering went 4-for-7 with two runs and a walk on the evening.

= Sophomore Thomas Miller had three hits and two RBI combined.

= Junior Gunner Rainey recorded three hits, including a double, and two RBI in the second game after walking twice in the first.

THE OPPOSITION
= Chase Coselman was 3-for-4 with a RBI in the nightcap.

= Noah Hecht knocked in four runs and had three hits during the twinbill.

= Ryan Morgan went 2-for-3 in the opener and had three RBI in the nightcap.

= John Kunec (W, 1-2) was the Game 2 winner after pitching two scoreless innings in relief. He allowed one hit and two walks with two strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED, Game 1
= Adrian turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Zschering tied the contest 2-2 with a RBI-single up the middle and Wood put the Bulldogs ahead to stay with a two-run single to center field.

= With AC holding that slim two-run lead going into the bottom half, Kzoo threatened by getting two runners on base via walks and then moving up on a stolen base and wild pitch. But Hanley struck out Alex Fultz looking to get out of the jam.    

HOW IT HAPPENED, Game 2
= The Hornets erased a 1-0 deficit with six runs in the bottom of the first inning for all the offense they would need. Hecht doubled to left center to plate a pair of runs and Morgan singled up the middle for two more runs to spark KC, which sent 12 batters to the plate on five hits, two errors and three walks.

= Adrian cut the deficit in half in the fifth on a Miller sacrifice fly to center field and Rainey RBI-single to left to make it 6-3.

= But Kzoo added two insurance runs in the sixth and another in the next frame. Hecht had a RBI on an infield single to shortstop, Morgan grounded into a fielder's choice to bring in a run and Fultz grounded out to the pitcher for a RBI.  

= The teams combined for 21 runners left on base with Adrian having 10 and Kzoo, 11.

= The Hornets' pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= The teams were originally supposed to play a doubleheader at Kalamazoo and on March 31, but the series got moved to Adrian due to the Hornets' unplayable field with a new date.

= The Bulldogs lead the all-time series over the Hornets, 112-67, including 71-39 at home.  

= Zschering assumes the top spot on the MIAA batting average list with a .426 clip.

= Rainey and Miller rank 1-2 in MIAA RBI with 35 and 34, respectively. Wood now appears in the top-5 at No. 4 with 30.

= Hanley jumps back into the official listings among earned-run average leaders with a 0.95 in 28.1 innings.

UP NEXT
= Adrian will play third-place Albion in a four-game MIAA series this weekend, first traveling to the Britons on Friday (1 and 3:30 p.m.) and then for another doubleheader in Adrian the next afternoon (1 and 3:30 p.m.).
