Nationally-Ranked Bulldogs Double Up Host Earlham, 6-3, in Baseball Non-Conference Affair

RICHMOND, Ind.--Sophomore Brandon Cooper got visiting Adrian on the scoreboard with a two-run single in the top of the third inning to break a scoreless game and the Bulldogs never trailed as they doubled up Earlham, 6-3, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS

TOP 'DAWGS
= Junior Gunner Rainey and sophomore Sean O'Keefe had two hits apiece to pace Adrian.

= Senior Dugan Darnell had a hit and a run batted in, and also got his second save after pitching a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts.

= Senior starter Jason Schroeder was credited with the win in a prearranged pitching order for this midweek non-conference game. He is 2-1 on the season after going four innings, with the Bulldogs staying in the lead.

THE OPPOSITION
= Robby Shondel was 3-for-4, including a double, to lead the EC offense.

= Marc Gendreau and Addison Robertson both knocked in a run. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Adrian jumped out to a 5-0 advantage after four-and-a-half innings. O'Keefe had a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 in the fourth and then junior Brady Wood and Darnell had back-to-back RBIs on a single and fielder's choice to make it a five-run advantage in the fifth.

= The Quakers cut it to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Gendreau had a RBI-single to shortstop and Robertson grounded out to the position to bring in another run.

= The teams traded runs in the eighth to wrap up the scoring. Darnell scored an unearned run after junior Tristin Richardson reached on an error before the Quakers scored their final run on a similar play.

= Earlham had 10 runners left on base.

= Adrian's three relievers--senior Jesse Marks, junior Spencer Ford and Darnell--limited Earlham to one run (no earned) and two hits with eight strikeouts over five innings.     

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= The teams' only previous meeting was in 2014 as Adrian prevailed 7-6 at Earlham.

= Adrian sophomore Thomas Miller, Rainey and Wood occupy the top spot in the MIAA with 38 RBI apiece.

= Schroeder enters 12th-place on the Bulldogs all-time pitching wins chart with a 12-3 career mark.

UP NEXT
= Adrian returns to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball play for the rest of the regular season, beginning with Trine University this weekend. The Thunder are scheduled to play in Adrian on Saturday before the four-game series concludes in Angola, Ind., on Sunday. Both doubleheaders have a 1 p.m. first-pitch.
