Jason Schroeder, Dugan Darnell Combine on Two-Hit Shutout in 3-0 Win over Trine

ADRIAN, Mich.--Seniors starting pitcher Jason Schroeder and reliever Dugan Darnell collaborated on a two-hit shutout and the Adrian offense scored three runs in the later innings, as the Bulldogs completed a four-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball sweep of Trine with a 3-0 victory on Wednesday evening.

TOP 'DAWGS
= Junior Gunner Rainey led all student-athletes with two hits and he had a run batted in.

= Classmate Brady Wood had a double and a RBI.

= Darnell had a double and RBI, and pitched a scoreless seventh inning in which he struck out the side. He earned this third save of the season.

= Schroeder improved to 3-1 on the season after going six innings in which he allowed just two singles. He struck out five Trine batters and did not issue a walk. 

THE OPPOSITION
= Jacob Heller and Joe Fiorucci each had a single for the Thunder.

= Shawn Ligocki (L, 1-4) pitched six strong innings allowing one run on two walks and three hits in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Senior Korey Mazur broke a scoreless game in the top of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Darnell from third base. Darnell led off with a ground-rule double to right-center field. 

= Adrian got two insurance runs in the next frame. Rainey had a RBI-single up the middle and Wood followed with a RBI-double over the left fielder's head.

= The teams both had golden chances to score in the first inning. In the top half, Adrian loaded the bases after two outs on a Rainey infield single and walks to Wood and Darnell. But Ligocki got senior Jason Croci to fly out to center to escape the jam. In Trine's bottom half, Heller singled to right center and advanced to second and third base on wild pitches before Schroeder got Cale Haller out swinging to strike out the side.

= The Thunder also had a man in scoring position in the second and fourth innings, but could not get him home.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Adrian leads the all-time series over Trine, 62-14, including 36-4 at home.

= This was a make-up contest from Sunday in Angola, Ind., after it was postponed due to a late start following a two-hour delay to start the first game of a doubleheader, won by Adrian 8-2. The location was shifted to here because of better field conditions.

= The Bulldogs' Magic Number to clinch the MIAA championship is now one, leading the conference by three games with four to play.

= The Thunder were the designated home team since this game was originally scheduled for their venue on Sunday.

= Rainey and Wood ties Mason Opple of Hope for the conference RBI lead with 42 apiece. Rainey has 98 in his 128-game Bulldogs career.

= Adrian has won eight games in a row and now stand 15-2 at home this season.

= The Bulldogs' 326 runs scored are the seventh-most in program history.

UP NEXT
= Adrian plays second-place Hope College this weekend in a four-game series to decide the MIAA championship. The teams will meet in Adrian on Friday (2 p.m.) for Senior Day, then shift the doubleheader to Holland on Saturday (1 p.m.).
