ACHA Gold Downs Michigan 5-1 to Sweep Opening Series from Wolverines

ADRIAN, Mich.--After a 6-4 victory over the University of Michigan on Saturday night in Ann Arbor, the Adrian College American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III men's hockey Gold team returned home to Arrington Ice Arena and earned a 5-1 victory to sweep the series from the Wolverines on their opening weekend.

Adrian took an early 1-0 lead on a spectacular shorthanded goal by Nick Bordeaux, set up by Brandon McLean and Phil Grippi, which was the only goal of the first period.

In period number two Adrian's power play began to click, as the Bulldogs made it 2-0 on a power-play goal by Joseph Gibbs, with assists from Ryan Betz and Joe Leskero. After the Wolverines Peter Wiersma scored Michigan's only goal of the day, Leskero and Bordeaux set up Andy Petersmark for another power-play goal to make the score 3-1 after two periods.

Adrian did all the scoring in the third period, as Trevor Benaglio scored with assists by Leskero and Jack Clary and Mario Tomei scored Adrian's third power-play goal of the game, with helpers from Michael Butler and Chase Whallon.

Will Emch was solid in the Bulldog net, turning back 23 Wolverine shots, while Michigan netminder Alex Chen was forced to make 52 saves on the afternoon.

The 2-0 Bulldogs will see their next action next weekend when they travel to the University of Michigan at Flint to begin a two-game series. Friday night's game at Flint will start at 7 p.m. and game 2 of that series will be back at Arrington Ice Arena on Saturday with face-off slated for 3 p.m.
