SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The first semifinal match up in the ACHA D3 National Tournament featured two perennial heavyweights at the D3 level in Adrian College and Hope College. Both teams swept through their respective pools in order to earn the right to play for a spot in the National Championship game.
The first period started with back and forth action as Hope struck first on a rush to open the scoring. Adrian's Anthony Rossi answered minutes later by banging home a rebound on the power play. The first period would end deadlocked at 1-1.
Early in the second period, Russ Rizzo buried a five-hole wrist shot on a rush to break the tie. Rizzo scored five- hole once again minutes later on a breakaway to extend the Bulldog lead to 3-1. Hope would retort with a power play goal before the period closed to make the score 3-2.
The final period saw a lot of back and forth action but remained scoreless despite a few surges by the offense of Hope College. Garrett Knappe ended the game with 35 saves in the winning effort.
Adrian College will face the University of Michigan - Flint tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. ET for the national title. The Bulldogs are 1-1 this season against UM Flint.
