Freshmen Lead Men's Hockey to Comeback Road Win in Season Opener at Utica, 3-1

UTICA, N.Y.--Freshman Austin Bottrell scored what proved to be the game-winning goal midway through the third period to help visiting Adrian to a come-from-behind 3-1 non-conference victory at Utica in a season-opening matchup of nationally-ranked squads.

THE BASICS

TOP 'DAWGS
= Freshmen linemates Jared Domin and Bottrell led Adrian with a goal and an assist.

= Senior Kevin Entmaa (1-0) stopped 15 of 16 shots he faced to get the victory.

= Junior Dino Balsamo and senior captain Cory Dunn led Adrian with six and five shots, respectively.

THE OPPOSITION
= Tyler Dill scored Utica's lone tally.

= Shawn Lynch and Jarrod Fitzpatrick were credited with an assist apiece.

= Gianluca Baggetta (0-1) had 36 stops in 50 minutes and 49 seconds between the pipes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Adrian peppered Utica in shots on goal 44 to 16, including 14-3 in a scoreless opening stanza.

= With 9:50 to go in the game, Bottrell redirected a shot from the point by classmate Matt Eller past Baggetta for the go-ahead goal for Adrian. Domin was able to free a loose puck along the left wing boards to Eller.

= Balsamo added an empty-goal for insurance to seal the win with 34 seconds left. Eller picked up the primary assist to complete a multi-point evening.

= Domin equaled the score 1-1 at the 3:25 mark of the second period, firing a shot just inside the right post from between the face-off circles.

= Dill gave Utica a 1-0 lead in the second period at 9:08 when he bulldozed his way to the right post and got the puck to trickle over the goal line. Game officials after the play discussed whether there should be any infractions, but allowed the goal to stand.

= Adrian won 34 of 54 face-offs, led by Balsamo (10-4) and freshman William Brochu (9-3).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= With the win, Adrian moves to 3-2 in season openers overall under Coach Adam Krug '12 who has won four of five road openers behind the bench.

= As a program, the Bulldogs are now 6-1-1 when opening the season on the road. 

= The Bulldogs lead the Pioneers in the all-time series, 2-0. Adrian also came away with a 2-1 home victory on Jan. 6, 2018.
