BLOOMINGTON, Minn.--Adrian College is the only school with two representatives on the first D3hockey.com Team of the Week for the 2018-19 campaign, announced late Thursday. Senior captain Cory Dunn (Trenton, Mich./Austin Bruins, NAHL) makes the team for a school-record ninth time on defense and junior Dino Balsamo (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson High School/Aston Rebels, NAHL) is one of three forwards named.
In a weekend matchup of nationally-ranked teams, Adrian defeated then-No. 6/7 and preseason United Collegiate Hockey Conference favorite Utica College by scores of 3-1 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday.
Earlier this week, Balsamo also won the initial Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week award, helping the Bulldogs sweep the Pioneers' on UC home ice to open the 2017-18 campaign. This also signaled his first NCHA weekly award.
Balsamo led Adrian with four points, which was a league-high over the opening weekend, on a goal and three assists in Adrian's impressive road sweep. He assisted on the tying goal at 1-1 on the way to a two-goal victory in the opener and also assisted on the go-ahead goal the next night. In all, he posted nine shots on goal and was a plus-3.
Dunn is known nationwide as a power play dynamo, and the quarterback of Adrian's unit did not disappoint on Saturday as his goal and assist on the man-advantage helped Adrian build a 3-0 lead before hanging on to win 3-2. Dunn was even for the weekend and upheld a high standard of play in all three zones. He was part of a group that held last season's No. 2 scoring offense to just three goals combined. He needs one point to become the 15th Bulldog in program history to reach 100 for his career.
