Men's Lacrosse Falls to MIAA Co-Leader Hope on Senior Day, 25-8

ADRIAN, Mich.--Visiting Hope used its depth and a fast start to defeat host Adrian, 25-8, to spoil the Bulldogs Senior Day in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's lacrosse action on Saturday. 

THE BASICS
= Final Score: Hope College 25, Adrian College 8

= Location: Kapnick Field at Docking Stadium, Adrian, Mich.; Weather conditions: Rain, 41 degrees, Wind N 8 mph

= Records: Hope Flying Dutchmen 10-3 overall (4-0 MIAA); Adrian Bulldogs 3-9 overall (0-4 MIAA)

TOP 'DAWGS
= Freshman Travis Fox led the offense with four points on two goals and two assists. 

= Classmate Max Leventis led Adrian with seven ground balls.

= Sophomore backup goalie Nick Rizzo made seven saves, several from point-blank range, and had a career-best three ground balls.

= Classmate Hayden Berger scored two goals and added an assist.

= Classmates Fernando Rodriguez and Jordan Oshowy also scored a pair of goals apiece.

= Freshman David Herig had a game-high four caused turnovers to set a career best and he had two ground balls.

THE OPPOSITION
= Jack Radzville led all players with five goals and six points.

= Marshall VanBelkum won 12-of-14 face-offs and picked up a game-best 12 ground balls to go with a goal.

= Max Kuiper (2g, 2a) and Rocco Mularoni (1g, 3a) both had a four-point afternoon, while Liam Cunningham and Nathaniel Hentschel each registered a hat trick.

= Cole Scheffler went 10-for-12 in the face-off "X" and he recorded four ground balls.

= Ian Bosman (W, 1-0) was credited with the win in the cage, recorded two saves over 30 minutes of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Hope raced to a 12-1 first-quarter lead and never looked back while leading horn-to-horn.

= The Flying Dutchmen jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the 13-minute, 23-second mark on goals from Radzville, Mularoni and Cunningham just 45 seconds apart.

= Rodriguez put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard on a feed from Leventis with 10:29 left to make it 3-1.

= Hope, however, reeled off nine unanswered goals to end the opening quarter.

= Adrian got some momentum in the second stanza with four goals but the Flying Dutchmen went into the halftime locker room up 17-5.

= The visitors also dominated the statistical categories: shots (46-18), shots on goal (32-13), face-off wins (27-9), ground balls (62-30) and clears (18-for-20, 14-for-25).

= Eighteen different Hope student-athletes recorded at least one point and 11 had multiple points.

 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
= Hope evens the all-time series at four wins apiece, having won the last four meetings. The 25 goals today are the most ever for the Flying Dutchmen against the Bulldogs.

= Leventis draws closer to Mitch Barnard's Adrian single-season ground balls record of 146, set in 2012. Leventis has 139 to lead the MIAA and rank four in NCAA Division III.

= Adrian freshman Christian Aurand had a caused turnover this afternoon to give him 25 on the season--ranking sixth in school history.

= The Bulldogs went 2-for-2 on extra-man opportunities to give them 29 man-up goals this season, breaking the previous team record of 28 set in 2012.

= Kuiper ranks third in MIAA assists with 25 and is tied for fourth with 53 total points.  

= Prior to the contest, Morgan Caldwell--Adrian's lone senior in 2019--was honored for his contributions to the program. The Cadillac High School product is a three-year team member who also wrestled for the Bulldogs. Caldwell has career highs of five goals, three assists, eight points, 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers this season.
