Men's Lacrosse Closes Season on the Road in Albion

ALBION, Mich.--Adrian College fell behind quickly in the first quarter and couldn't recover in a 26-9 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's lacrosse defeat at second-place Albion on Friday evening to conclude the 2019 season. 

THE BASICS
= Final Score: Albion College 26, Adrian College 9

= Location: Alumni Field, Albion, Mich.; Weather conditions: Partly Cloudy, 53 degrees, Wind NW 8 mph

= Records: Albion Britons 7-8 overall (5-1 MIAA); Adrian Bulldogs 3-11 overall (0-6 MIAA)

TOP 'DAWGS
= Freshman Max Leventis scooped up a game-best 17 ground balls and won 23 of 35 face-offs.

= Classmate Travis Fox led the Adrian offense with four goals.

= Freshman Chris French scored three points on a pair of goals and an assist.

= Sophomore Hayden Berger recorded a career-best eight ground balls.  

= Classmate Kawi Cooper, who is an attackman, made his collegiate debut in goal and made five saves after Bulldogs starting keeper Nick Rizzo left the contest with a concussion.

THE OPPOSITION
= Jace Conley led all players with seven goals, five assists and 12 total points to go along with five ground balls.

= Jerry Haadsma added four goals and posted a team-best eight ground balls.

= Scott Shepard also had four points with two goals and two assists.

= Seven other Britons had multi-point games, including Matt Chen who produced two goals and an assist for three points. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Albion scored six unanswered goals to lead 6-1 after the first quarter and outscored Adrian 8-2 in the second to take a commanding 14-3 lead at the intermission.

= Fox scored unassisted 2 minutes and 6 seconds into the game to give the visiting Bulldogs their only lead at 1-0.

= But Conley figured in five of Albion's six goals in the opening stanza to spark the Britons. He scored four times and assisted on Drew Harm's goal with 7:52 left to put the home team ahead for good at 2-1.

= In the second half, Albion started with a 7-0 third quarter to make the score 21-3 after 45 minutes of action and secure the win in the regular-season finale.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
= French's final MIAA statistical rankings for the regular season include second in goals (44) and shots (147) and third in points (63).

= Leventis is the conference's ground balls leader with a school-record 174 and also first in face-off wins (234-of-417).

= French's 63 points are tied for sixth-most in school history and his 147 shots break the record held by Jake Waldrup, who released 143 in 2016. The 44 goals by French are also tied for seventh in AC history.

= Adrian still leads the all-time series 7-6, but Albion has won six straight meetings dating to the 2015 season.

= Leventis also set school single-season records for face-off wins (234) and attempts (417).

= As a team, the Bulldogs set program benchmarks for ground balls per game (42.9, 601 total was third) and man-up goals (30 to lead the MIAA).

UP NEXT
= Adrian is scheduled to return 24 of 26 student-athletes for next season's team. The 2019 roster was dominated by underclassmen as 12 freshmen saw action in seven games or more, contributing to 66.7 percent of the scoring offense.
