ADRIAN, Mich.--Coming off its most successful season in program history, the Adrian College men's soccer team looks to take another step forward in 2017 with the announcement of a competitive 17-game schedule highlighted by 10 home dates.
Adrian kicks off its 40th varsity season by beginning the year hosting a four-game homestand in Docking Stadium: Augustana College of Illinois (Sep. 3), NAIA-scholarship Michigan-Dearborn (Sep. 9), Marietta (Sep. 10) and Olivet (Sep. 13). The last date against the Comets also serves as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener. The Bulldogs' season opener will be their first meeting against the Vikings since 2014, and UMD is a first-time opponent.
The Bulldogs venture on the road for the first time at MIAA foe Kalamazoo on Saturday, Sep. 16.
Three days later in Grand Rapids, Adrian will try to become the first MIAA team to beat Calvin back-to-back for the first time since Hope College in 2010. Last season, the Bulldogs upended the 10-time defending conference champion and 2016 NCAA finalist Knights for the first time since 1997.
Adrian returns to Docking Stadium on Saturday, Sep. 23, and Wednesday, Sep. 27, for night matches (7 p.m.) against Albion and Alma colleges, respectively.
The Bulldogs stay with the MIAA schedule against Trine University on the road to close the month on Saturday, Sep. 30.
Adrian begins October where it ended September--on the road. The Bulldogs will play against Hope on Tuesday, Oct. 3, before venturing to Olivet College on Saturday, Oct. 7, to wrap up a season-long three-game road swing.
Four of the Bulldogs' final six regular-season contests will be at home. K-zoo (Oct. 11) and Calvin (Oct. 14) come to town before Adrian's final two road dates are at Albion (Oct. 17) and Alma (Oct. 21). The regular season finishes with Trine and Hope invading Docking Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 25, and Saturday, Oct. 28, respectively.
Adrian is anticipating the return of all 11 starters from the 2016 squad that graduated only three seniors. Last fall, the Bulldogs set 10 program records including wins (11), conference victories (9), goals scored (33), goals-against average (0.89) and shutouts (8). Their third-place MIAA showing matched the 2010 team (8-4-2) for the best in program history.
The Bulldogs' four all-conference selections--Brandon Katona, Chris Stanhope, Tad Davis and Sean Cain--on the first and second teams are the most since 2010, and that quartet is back.
