Men's Volleyball Hangs Tough with No. 15 Rivier

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Adrian College men's volleyball team lost to No. 15 Rivier 3-1 in game two on Friday, March 8. It was the Bulldogs' first match against a ranked opponent this season.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Rivier 3, Adrian 1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-17)

Location: Thousand Oaks, Calif. (Gilbert Arena)

Records: AC 11-8, Rivier 11-6

HOW IT HAPPENED

Adrian took the first set and did so with an impressive hitting ability, only committing two errors to hit .385. The teams traded points early in the match, but the Bulldogs were able to win a few points in a row midway through the first set and didn't look back, going on a 7-2 run to take a 1-0 lead after the opening set, capped off by a kill from junior Noah Marcinkowski.

The second set started similar to the first, with neither team able to pull away. This time it was Rivier going on a small run to take the lead and the Raiders would ultimately hold on for the 25-20 set victory to tie the match. Rivier hit a match-high .429 in the second set to Adrian's .278.

Rivier took an early lead in the third set, but AC won five points in a row to comeback and take the lead, 8-6. The set stayed tight throughout the rest of it, and was knotted at 22 when Marcinkowski picked up a kill to give the Black and Gold the lead, 23-22. The Raiders didn't quit, and won three points in a row to comeback and take the set, 25-23.

Adrian took an early 3-0 lead in the fourth set but Rivier came right back to take the lead and pulled away in the set, taking it 25-17 for the 3-1 victory in the match.

TOP DOGS

• Marcinkowski led the offense with 13 kills and freshman Tedrick Gula added 12.

• Junior Joseph Campana totaled 40 assists in the match.

• Junior Kevin Curley led the defense with 12 digs and senior Mike Gold had two solo blocks and five block assists.

THE OPPOSITION

• David Smith led Rivier's offense with 18 kills and Francis Kokoros had 15.

• Pedro Campos assisted on 53 points.

• Cam Roth had 19 digs.

UP NEXT

Adrian is back in action tomorrow for the final day of the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational for the Bulldogs. AC plays Emmanuel (Mass.) at 12 p.m. tomorrow and then Johnson & Wales (R.I.) at 6 p.m.
