Zach Rieger Proves Mettle in First NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championships Appearance

NCAA Brackets (coming soon)

LA CROSSE, Wis.--Adrian College junior co-captain Zach Rieger completed his first experience at the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championships here at the La Crosse Center. And though Friday night's performance was not what he hoped for, Rieger was excited to be competing on the national stage.

Rieger reached the second round of the consolation bracket at 285 pounds, but was eliminated after going 0-2. In his NCAA debut, the social studies major was pinned by No. 3-seeded and senior Donny Logendyke of 2015 national champion Augsburg College in 2 minutes and 23 seconds. Rieger, however, bounced back to give Wisconsin-Stevens Point sophomore Donny Ralston a close battle. Ralston, who owns a 36-9 record, had a 2-1 lead in the first period and hung on for a 5-2 decision.

Rieger wraps up his best season as a Bulldog with a 24-9 record--quadrupling his victory total from his sophomore campaign. He also had a career-best 14 pinfalls.

"It's a great feeling being a first-time NCAA qualifier," said Rieger, who is out of Hudson High School. "I've reached a personal goal to qualify for the national tournament this season" and he looks forward to improving in 2017-18 to build on continued success.

The University of Wisconsin, La Crosse is the host institution and the event concludes tomorrow.
