OLIVET, Mich.--The Adrian College men's wrestling team won two of three matches on Saturday at the Olivet College Duals in the Cutler Event Center. After a tough 27-16 defeat to University of Ozarks (Ark.), the Bulldogs bounced back with authority in victories over Henry Ford College, 48-6, and Mount St. Joseph University, 32-20.

Sophomore transfer Devon Pingel led Adrian with three pins on Saturday and a 2-1 dual mark. The Lapeer native and Cleveland State transfer picked up falls in 35 seconds and 2 minutes, 10 seconds. He also bumped up two weight classes to heavyweight and got another pin in 3:19 over Jacob Giorgi of Henry Ford College.

"Honestly, it was a lot easier than I thought it was. My second match I took him feet to back. I was giving up about 80 pounds," Pingel said about wrestling heavyweight. "It feels good knowing the team can count on me. Our team looked good today from 125 up."

Adrian beat Mount St. Joseph 35-20 and Henry Ford 48-6, setting school modern day records in the latter for points and margin of victory (42). The Bulldogs started the day with a 27-16 loss to Ozarks (Ark.)

Bulldogs head coach Bill Schindel's team is now 3-1 on the season after beating Manchester 41-10 on Friday.

"I couldn't be more proud of them to start the season off 3-1," he said. "We made tremendous strides in our wrestling and in our program as a whole. Even though we lost a close one, we were right there. We just have to keep working. One thing here or there makes the difference. That's why we lost the first one. We lost a few key positions."

Sophomore Michael Jacobs also won all three of his matches at 165. He won by major decision 15-4 over Zac Holub of Mount St. Joseph, pinned Henry Ford's Christian Cecil in 3:41 and earned a 9-7 decision over Ozarks' Jacob Sherrill.

"It always feels good to go 3-0 at a tournament, but there is always stuff to work on when I go back to the room," Jacobs said. "It's tough to take a loss as a team, but once we get to MIAA competition that's when it really counts because we want to be conference champs."

The Bulldogs faced a little bit of adversity on Saturday, Schindel said. From a late night getting back from Indiana and the dual with Manchester, to a late bus and numerous starters out with injuries.

"We wanted to put them through that because you can't' control everything," Schindel said. "For us, to still compete the way we did, I think says a lot about their willingness."

Schindel praised sophomore Zachary Reynolds, freshman Derick DuVall and sophomore Jake Burns helping to fill in for those injured wrestlers.

"Every guy has to step up," Schindel said. "We've got to move some guys around. That's why you've got to have depth — next guy up and we wrestle."

There were positives to take away from the Bulldogs' losses, he said.

"We never stopped moving forward. We never stopped attacking," Schindel said. "As a coach if every guy is always the aggressor you're putting yourself in a good position to win matches. I think that says a lot about the program and that these guys are really buying in."

Schindel said he has been impressed with how quickly his team is picking up new technique being taught in the room and then using it in matches.

"We never stopped moving forward. We never stopped attacking," Schindel said. "As a coach, if every guy is always the aggressor you're putting yourself in a good position to win matches. I think that says a lot about the program and that these guys are really buying in."

The Bulldogs are off until Nov. 29 when they head to NAIA Lourdes for a dual bout.
