WHEATON, Ill.--Sophomore Noah Nieman placed second in the 149-pound championship to lead Adrian College at the Wheaton College Pete Willson Invitational which wrapped up two days of men's wrestling competition inside King Arena on Saturday. The Bulldogs scored 41-1/2 points to place 19th in the 38-team field.

Nieman finished 4-1 on the weekend, including a pin over Drew Mandell of Olivet with 38 seconds left in their semifinals match. It was a thrilling victory for Nieman who trailed 10-4 after the first period, 14-8 after two and 16-14 when made his move to take down Mandell and terminate the match. Nieman defeated two D3wrestle.com Top-20 wrestlers along the way and lost to No. 14 Luke Hernandez of Mount Union in a 4-minute, 9-second fall in the championship.

Freshman Isaiah Espinoza just missed placing at 285, going 2-2 and reaching the quarterfinals. He lost a tough 3-2 decision on an escape by Patrick Mulkerin of University of Chicago in the second sudden-victory overtime of their consolation round 6 bout.

Sophomore Devon Pingel matched teammate Nieman with a 4-2 mark at 184, reeling off four wins in a row--three by major decision--to make it to the consolation round 6. Pingel, who lost due to a medical forfeit that ended his run from possible placement, is ranked ninth in the nation by D3wrestle.com.

Other Bulldogs who won multiple matches: freshman Robert Nowik (2-2 at 141), sophomore Bryant Moore (2-2 at 174) and freshman Zach Altman (2-2 at 165).

Mount Union defeated North Central-Illinois for first place in the team standings, 135 to 105-1/2 points.

Adrian next hosts Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival and nationally-ranked Olivet College in the home finale on Thursday, Jan. 31 (7 p.m.), in the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
