INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA Division III Wrestling Committee announced Monday the participants in the 2019 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. Adrian College sophomore Devon Pingel is one of 180 participants who will compete in the championships that will be held March 8-9 at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Ferrum College will serve as the host.
Student-athletes qualified for the championship by placing top-three in their respective weight classes at one of the six NCAA regional tournaments held on Feb. 22, 23 and 24. The complete list of all wrestlers competing in the championship is available on the NCAA website at ncaa.com and the complete seeded bracket will be available on NCAA.com, Monday, March 4. NCAA.com will stream all sessions.
Pingel is headed to the NCAA championships in his first season as a Bulldog after a terrific debut at the Central Regional at Wabash College's Knowling Fieldhouse in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He finished as the runner-up at 184 pounds and Adrian scored 40-1/2 points to finish 13th in the 19-school team standings.
Pingel went 3-1 over the weekend in his first regional as a Bulldog. He lost to nationally-ranked Dylan Roth (No. 5 by the National Wrestling Coaches' Association) of Heidelberg in the title bout via pin 3 minutes and 35 seconds in. The score was only 2-1 in Roth's favor at the end of the first period before he got Pingel on his back early in the second.
But Pingel got to the championship match with a 10-4 decision over Thomas More's Avery Jones to start his day. On Friday, Pingel defeated Cash Thompson of Ohio Northern by decision, 4-0, and Dylan Seaton of Alma by a 14-6 major decision. Pingel improves to 28-6 on the season and is listed as a contender as the 11th-ranked wrestler in the latest D3wrestle.com individual rankings after transferring from NCAA Division I Cleveland State at the end of his 2017-18 freshman campaign
Pingel will be the third Bulldog in the modern era of the program (since 2015-16) to represent Adrian at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.
