DELAWARE, Ohio – In the first meeting between the women's basketball teams from Adrian College and Mount Union College, it was clutch free throw shooting by the Bulldogs which gave them a 75-72 win over the Raiders at the Ohio Wesleyan Bishop Hoops Classic on Sunday evening.
The two teams battled all night with 11 ties and 23 lead changes before the Bulldogs prevailed to improve to 6-4 overall and advance to play host Ohio Wesleyan on Monday at 3 p.m. There were 21 lead changes in the second half alone and seven ties in the last 20 minutes. MUC led 37-33 at halftime and shot 41.7 percent from the floor. Adrian shot 39.3 percent in the first half but really hit their stride in the second half. The Bulldogs wound up shooting 47.8 percent from the floor in the second half and were 16-of-20 from the charity stripe.
The game came down to crunch time with the teams tied 65-65 with 4:34 remaining. Adrian took a 67-66 lead with 4:14 left on a LaQwana Dockery jumper and held that lead until 2:10 to go after a layup by Sarah Grippi. The Bulldogs answered on their next possession as Lauren Rhoads made a layup with 1:50 left to put Adrian up 69-68. Dockery hit a pair of free throws with 56 seconds to play to increase the lead to 71-68. Robyn Brown's layup for Mount Union cut the lead to one with 32 seconds left. Rhoads was fouled on the inbound and nailed both free throws to again give AC a three-point lead with 27 ticks. Colleen Kennehan converted a layup seven seconds later and the Raiders were again forced to foul. Antoinea McElroy calmly sank both free throws to give AC a 75-72 lead with 13 seconds to go. Amanda Turner launched a three-pointer with two seconds left and the shot missed to give the Bulldogs a win.
Casey Fougerousse tied a career-high with 16 points going 6-of-11 from the floor including 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Rhoads had the second highest output of the season with 16 points and went 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Dockery scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds in 32 minutes. Jorden York scored a career-high 10 points and grabbed four rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench. The Adrian bench had 19 points as Jasmyne Owens chipped in nine points in 22 minutes.
