ADRIAN, Mich. - The women's basketball team began the second round of the MIAA gauntlet on Saturday afternoon as they hosted second place Olivet College (16-2, 8-1). The Comets won the earlier meeting in Olivet and completed the season sweep of the Bulldogs with a 71-59 decision after the Bulldogs controlled the game for most of the first half.
Adrian grabbed the lead right from the tip and led by as many as eight at 20-12 with 9:19 left in the opening half. The Comets took their first lead at 28-27 with 1:34 remaining in the half after a 16-7 run over a seven-minute plus span. Olivet scored the final eight points of the half to lead 33-27 at halftime.
The Comets did not cool off at halftime as they went on an 11-0 run to start the second half and build a 44-27 advantage just 5:02 into the second half. That run seemed to seal the fate for the Bulldogs who got as close as 11 points down for the rest of the game. Adrian shot 36.7 percent including 6-of-20 from downtown. Heading into the game Adrian averaged 69 percent at the free throw line, but went just 9-of-21 (42.9 percent).
Senior Casey Fougerousse scored a team-high 16 points off the bench and connected on 6-of-11 from the field (4-of-8 three's). Senior Amy Van Gessel came in averaging 6.4 points but scored 13 points and added eight rebounds. It was her first double-digit game since Nov. 16 and set a season-high. Senior LaQwana Dockery added 10 points to stretch her double-digit streak to six games. She was 4-of-8 from the floor in 27 minutes. Olivet was led by 19 points from Chelsea Ciba. The Comets shot 38.7 percent in the first half but responded by shooting 54.2 percent in the second half. OC also went 7-of-13 from behind the arc.
