ADRIAN, Mich. – The women's basketball team participated in their annual Pink Zone game to raise awareness for breast cancer and also held Senior Day festivities on Saturday afternoon. There was a great deal of emotion both before and then after the game as the Bulldogs clinched fourth place in the MIAA and a berth in the MIAA Tournament with a 70-54 win over Alma College. The win coupled with Kalamazoo falling at home to Calvin vaulted the Bulldogs to a 9-7 record in the conference. Adrian finished the regular season 13-11 overall and will face top-seed Hope in Holland on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
It was a slow start for the Bulldogs as they trailed 10-4 in the first six minutes of the game against the winless Scots. Alma kept their lead throughout the rest of the half and led 34-28 at halftime. With the season on the line, Adrian responded with a big second half. The Bulldogs tied the score at 36-36 less than three minutes into the second half. Adrian used a 14-2 run to start the second half and led 42-36 with 14:53 left in the contest.
Alma got within a point at 43-42 but the Bulldogs stretched their lead to 54-43 at the 9:30 mark to take control of the game. The Adrian defense clamped down over the last 7:24 of the game allowing just four points. Five players played in their final home game for the Bulldogs. LaQwana Dockery scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. Lauren Rhoads scored seven points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Amy Van Gessel scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 22 minutes. Casey Fougerousse scored four points and dished out three assists. Stephany Bohlmann played 11 minutes off the bench and grabbed two rebounds and made one steal.
Adrian shot 37.3 percent from the floor and struggled behind the arc going 4-of-24. They grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and had 14 second-chance points. The Bulldogs outscored the Scots, 44-24, in the paint and 31-20 in bench points.
