Women's Basketball Opens 2018 with a 74-46 Defeat at Calvin College

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--Calvin used a strong second half to pull away for a 74-46 victory over visiting Adrian in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action on Wednesday.

THE BASICS
= Final Score: Calvin College 74, Adrian College 46

= Location: Van Noord Arena; Grand Rapids, Mich.

= Records: Calvin Knights 8-5 overall, 3-1 MIAA; Adrian Bulldogs 4-8 overall, 2-3 MIAA

TOP 'DAWGS
= Junior Ashley Morris scored a team-high 13 points in her return to the starting lineup after an illness caused her to miss three games. She also had a team-best four rebounds.

= Sophomores Angelina Goosby and Shannon Garvey chipped in eight points each.

THE OPPOSITION
= Bre Luurtsema scored a game-high 19 points on 5-for-10 from the field and 9-of-16 from the free throw line. She completed the double-double with a game-high 15 rebounds.

= Kara Minderhoud added 11 points and seven rebounds, and Becca Richards scored 10 points with three steals.

= Rachel Warners, who scored eight points and had six rebounds, had five of Calvin's seven blocked shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Calvin shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the floor while holding Adrian to 33.3 (14-42).

= The Knights also enjoyed advantages of 36-16 points in the paint, 20-7 second-chance points and 28-14 points off turnovers. Adrian committed 21 turnovers.

= Calvin led 32-22 at halftime, but outscored Adrian 24-11 in the third quarter to take control.

= Garvey drained a 3ball to give Adrian a 12-5 lead with 5 minutes, 53 seconds left in the first quarter.

= Luurtsema hit two free throws to give Calvin the lead for good at 14-12 and 2:37 remaining as part of a 13-3 run to end the first quarter, leading 18-15 after 10 minutes.

= After Adrian pulled within four, 24-20, late in the second quarter, Calvin used another strong run to maintain a double-digit lead for most of the contest.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Calvin leads the all-time series over Adrian 89-26, including 48-11 on its homecourt. 

UP NEXT
= Adrian returns home on Saturday against MIAA opponent Albion (3 p.m.) to begin a three-game homestand.
