Late Period Heroics Lifts Saints Over Adrian 4-3
DULUTH, Minn. – Two goals with just over a minute remaining in the second period and one goal with less than 45 second remaining in the third proved to pay dividends, as the St. Scholoastica (7-2-0, 7-2-0 NCHA) women's hockey team was victorious 4-3 over Adrian College (5-5-1, 3-5-1 NCHA) tonight (Dec. 11) inside Mars Lakeview.
After a scoreless first period, Adrian junior Ashley Gniewek scored when there was a loose puck in front of the net at the 31st second mark in the second with 47 seconds left in a Bulldog power-play. Sophomore Nina Laurie (1st) and senior Kelly Salis (5th) earned the assists. Gniewek now has three goals on the year.
The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of another power-play opportunity when junior Kristin Maton went coast-to-coast and placed the puck just above the Saints' goalie's right pad. Freshman Courtney Millar (2nd) earned the assist. This gives Maton three goals on the season.
On a power-play with just over a minute remaining in the second frame and down two scores, the Saints mustered two goals within 19 seconds. Nina Waidacher scored the first (18:57) and Michelle Fischer had the second (19:16).
Adrian regained the lead at the 10:32 mark in the third period when freshman Hannah McGowan scored on an even strength goal, giving McGowan five on the season. The Saints did not let the Bulldogs celebrate too long as they knotted up the contest again, a minute and seven seconds later, as Waidacher notched her second goal of the game.
A two-minute Adrian checking penalty at the 17:53 mark proved to be costly as St. Scholastica scored with 34 seconds left in the power-play when Jordan Klimek scored off a rebound for the eventual game-winner. Malin Zetterberg and Alex Blaire were in on the assists.
Adrian goalie senior Brittany Zeches (3-1) went 59:49 minutes and earned 18 saves.
The Saints held a slight 22-20 shot advantage over Adrian.
The Bulldogs look to regroup and will face the Saints again tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. EST.
