Two Third Period Saints’ Goals Forces a 2-2 Tie in OT
DULUTH, Minn. – For the second straight game, a 2-0 Adrian lead was not enough to top St. Scholastica as the Bulldogs women's hockey team settled for a 2-2 tie in overtime to the Saints tonight (Dec. 12). The Saints' scored the tying goal on a power play while Adrian was serving a five-minute boarding penalty with 4:02 left in regulation.
Adrian (5-5-2, 3-5-2 NCHA) took advantage of its few looks in the Saints' (7-2-1, 7-2-1 NCHA) zone early on at the 9:02 mark in the second period as senior Brooke Zaleski fired the puck past the Saint's goalie for the score after St. Scholastica turned the puck over. Sophomore Nina Laurie created the opportunity as she got off a nice shot initially as she flew past the Saints' defense.
Two minutes after the Saints' were down a goal; they were down a player as Brenna Flatley was called for tripping. With 46 seconds in the power play, the Lady Bulldogs capitalized when senior Olivia Rork gloved down an attempted Saints' clear which was followed by sophomore Sarah Connelly finding freshman Hannah McGowan for the score. McGowan is now second on the team with six goals this season.
In the third period, the Saints took advantage of two of five power play opportunities. Alana Levido scored St. Scholastica's first goal of the game in the 13:19 minute and Jordan Klimek scored the tying score at the 15:58 mark. Both goals came when Adrian was serving a five-minute boarding penalty.
Adrian senior goalie Brittany Zeches made great stops all game and gathered in 29 saves, including 15 in the final two periods.
Both teams recorded 31 shots. Adrian was 1-for-7 on power play opportunities and St. Scholastica was 2-for-10.
The Lady Bulldogs have a 26-day break to get ready for the number one team in the country as the travel to Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) on Friday, January 6 at 7:00 p.m.
