NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The top-ranked Adrian College women's hockey team lost to No. 2 Plattsburgh State 2-0 on Sunday, Jan. 6 in game one of the East-West Hockey Classic hosted by Norwich.
Final Score: No. 2 Plattsburgh Sate 2, No. 1 Adrian 0
Location: Northfield, Vt. (Kreitzberg Arena)
Records: Adrian 11-2, Plattsburgh State 11-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
Plattsburgh State opened the scoring eight minutes into the first when Nicole Unsworth fired the puck into the net for the 1-0 lead. The Cardinals would strike again with 2:29 remaining in the opening frame on a shot from Courtney Moriarty. The rest of the game would go by scoreless, with Plattsburgh holding on for the 2-0 victory.
The win avenges the only loss on the season for the Cardinals, as Adrian handed Plattsburgh State its only loss on Nov. 24 in game one of the Panther Cardinal Classic. The Bulldogs are one of only two teams to hold the Cardinals to two or fewer goals this season and have accomplished that feat twice. The other team to hold Plattsburgh State to two goals is Adrian's opponent for tomorrow, host and No. 3-ranked Norwich.
The loss snapped the Black and Gold's 10-game winning streak, and was AC first loss since losing to Wisconsin-River Falls on Oct. 28 in the second game of the season.
• Sophomore forward Brooke Schembri led the Bulldogs in shots on goal, taking five of the team's 17.
• Sophomore goaltender Kate Turner made 25 stops in the loss.
• Moriarty and Unsworth were the goal scorers for the Cardinals, with Maci Hoskins, Ashley Songin, Taylor Whitney, and Mackenzie Millen picking up assists.
• Kassi Abbot turned aside all 17 shots on goal for the shutout.
The Bulldogs will face off with No. 3 Norwich in the consolation game of the East-West Classic. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
