ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Adrian College women's lacrosse team completed an amazing comeback on the road against Augustana College (Ill.) to win 14-13 in overtime on Sunday, March 24. The game was the Bulldogs' first overtime contest and first overtime win since the 2012 season.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Adrian 14, Augustana 13 - OT

Location: Rock Island, Ill. (Thorson-Lucken Field)

Records: AC 4-1, Augustana 3-3

HOW IT HAPPENED

Augustana dominated the scoresheet in the first half, taking a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes. The Vikings' run was halted by a pair of Adrian goals, from freshman Cristin Culbertson and sophomore Erika McDonald, to cut the deficit in half. Augustana got those two and another right back to extend its lead to 7-2 at the break.

The Vikings added another goal 41 seconds into the second half to open a six-goal lead, the largest of the game. Senior Annie Rice scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart to make it 8-4 Vikings and spark the AC comeback. The two sides traded goals until the Black and Gold scored four in a row to draw within one. An Augustana goal momentarily stopped the Bulldogs' run until Adrian tacked on two more to draw level with 8:23 left on the clock for the first time since 25:25 remaining in the first half.

Augustana scored two more to regain the lead but Rice scored with 3:13 left to put the Bulldogs within one again. The key moment in the game was when the Vikings' goaltender was called for a yellow card with 56 seconds remaining in the game. Since she is the goaltender, the net was left open for Rice's free position shot with 53 seconds left to tie the game up. That was also Augustana's fourth yellow card of the game, meaning it was non-releasable and AC was still in a man up situation for overtime.

Adrian made use of that man up situation just 37 seconds into the extra frame when sophomore Gwyneth Carlson scored to end the game and complete the Bulldog's comeback. Classmate Hannah Roegner took the first shot of overtime and missed high but Carlson got the ball and took a shot of her own, hitting the post. She got her own rebound and didn't miss the second time, putting it home for the win.

QUOTABLE

• "This was a great win for our team and really speaks to the character and determination of this group. On the road after a long trip and against a very tough opponent, we got in a hole early but never stopped fighting." - Head Coach Brett Asher

• "Our defense played great in the second half and Roegner came in and gave us a big boost taking draws. On the offensive side of things, we again got contributions from everyone and Rice stepped up and got our offense going and made the big play to cause a turnover with less than a minute left and then scored the game tying goal, with Carlson coming through with the game winner." - Asher
