FREELAND, Mich. - Adrian College women's soccer took home both Player of the Week awards in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) for the week of Oct. 29 – Nov. 4, to go along with the Bulldogs' MIAA Tournament Championship. Junior goalkeeper Ayverie Giller was named the Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman forward McKenna Mahoney picked up the Offensive Player of the Week award.
Giller has been the Bulldogs' backstop all season long, and helped propel AC to the MIAA Championship with two shutouts in the MIAA Tournament, holding Calvin scoreless, 3-0, in the semifinal and then blanking top-seeded and nationally ranked Hope in the championship match. The First Team All-MIAA selection has only allowed one goal since Sep. 29 and has helped Adrian post eight shutouts in that span, including a current streak of 471 minutes and 59 seconds without a goal against for Adrian.
Mahoney has been an offensive star for the Bulldogs this year, and she scored both game-winning goals in the MIAA Tournament for the Black and Gold this year. She scored in the 52nd minute from the top of the box in the semifinal victory over Calvin and then headed a ball in off a redirect from a corner in the 13th minute against Hope for the title clinching goal. The Second Team All-MIAA forward is on a three-match scoring streak, and her 11 goals are tied for the team lead with junior Caroline Fleming.
This marks the second time this year that Adrian has taken both Player of the Week awards in the same week, as freshman Sarah Brannan (D) and sophomore Megan Louwers (O) swept the awards for the week of Oct. 1 – 7. It's also the second week in a row that the Bulldogs have won the Defensive Player of the Week award, as senior Rachel Rodeheffer took home the honor last week.
The Bulldogs will continue their season with their first ever berth in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament, where they will face Loras College in the first round. The match is hosted by Wheaton (Ill.) and will be played on Friday, Nov. 9 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
