ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College softball team opened both at home and in conference Wednesday evening against Calvin College. The Bulldogs and Knights completed the first game of a doubleheader and 11 innings were needed to find a decision.
Adrian jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the third inning as Karissa DeVore homered to center field to score Katie Dewyre and Macy Laws. The Knights fought their way back into the game as they scored twice in the top of the fifth and once in the top of the seventh to tie the game, 3-3. The Bulldogs could not score in the bottom of the seventh as the game went to extra innings. The teams battled through chances in the first three innings of extra play as the score remained tied, 3-3, heading into the 11th inning. The top of the 11th saw the Knights score twice as they took advantage of Bulldog miscues and Calvin took the lead, 5-3. Adrian could not cross home plate in their final at-bat as they fell to Calvin in a hard fought battle. This loss leaves the Bulldogs at 5-5 on the season and 0-1 in the MIAA.
Jessica Sarch went 3-for-6 with a double. Karissa DeVore went 2-for-3 with three RBI, a run scored and a sacrifice bunt.
Kelsey Meyer made the start for the Bulldogs as she pitched 6.1 innings, allowed three runs and struck out 10 batters. Brooke Stewart (0-2) earned the decision as she pitched 4.2 innings, gave up two runs and recorded three strikeouts.
The Bulldogs and Knights had game two of their doubleheader suspended at a 3-3 score in the top of the seventh inning due to darkness. Adrian is the away team due to MIAA rules and had the bases loaded with two outs when play was halted. The game is scheduled to be completed Thursday at 3:30 p.m. weather permitting at AC Softball Field.
