CLERMONT, Fla. – The Adrian College softball team dropped its opening game of the season in an 8-0 decision against York College (Pa.) on Sunday, March 3.

THE BASICS

Final Scoreline: York 8-8-1, Adrian 0-6-3

Location: Clermont, Fla. (Hancock Recreational Complex, Field Two)

Records: AC 0-1, YC 2-2

HOW IT HAPPENED

York jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring on a sacrifice bunt and then homering to center field. Adrian's defense was able to hold the Spartans to only those two runs through the middle innings, with freshman pitcher Natalie Mathers retiring 11 batters in a row before allowing a single to lead off the top of the sixth. Mathers picked up six of her seven strikeouts during that stretch, including four consecutive strikeouts from the second inning into the third.

The Bulldogs' hits were spaced out throughout the game, with AC picking up a hit in each of the first three innings and then again in the fifth. The closest the Black and Gold came to threatening was in the second when senior shortshop Krista Lynch hit a two out double to center field before a pop up ended the inning.

York's offense came back alive in the sixth with two outs after a double play. A single to right scored a run from first and then a double and single from the next two batters put a three-spot up for the Spartans in the top of the sixth. York's final damage came in the top of the seventh with a three-run homer to center with zero outs made it 8-0. Adrian managed to get runners on first and second with one out in the bottom-half of the seventh but couldn't get the runners around to score, ending the game 8-0.

TOP DAWGS
