ALMA, Mich.--Visiting Adrian College swept all six singles matches on the way to an 8-1 victory over Alma College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's tennis action at the Superior Street Tennis Courts on Wednesday. The Bulldogs improve to 3-10 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA, while the Scots drop to 3-11 on the season and 0-4 in the conference.
Adrian took the lead for good, 2-1, following the completion of doubles. Seniors Amber Laginess and Olivia Neumann dispatched Matilda Ennis / Caroline Ross at No. 2, 8-3, and sophomores Makayla Jorgensen/Julia Maltbie breezed by Jessica Penhale / Amy Wood at No. 3, 8-1.
It was all Bulldogs in the singles round with five wins in straight-sets. Senior Renae Almasy helped set the tone with a three-set thriller over Brooke Butterfield at No. 1, 7-6(5), 6-7(6), 10-8. Earning two points after their wins included Laginess at No. 2 (Caroline Ross, 6-0, 6-1), Neumann at No. 5 (Penhale, 6-2, 6-0) and Jorgensen at No. 6 (Wood, 6-0, 6-1). In addition to Laginess, Neumann and and Jorgensen, sophomores Samantha Cyrus and Sara Anthony also won their matches at No. 3 and 4 over Matilda Ennis (6-1, 6-2) and Lucy McCarthy (6-2, 6-2), respectively.
Alma picked up its lone point at No. 1 doubles where Butterfield / McCarthy defeated Almasy and Cyrus, 8-3.
Adrian hits the courts again on Friday at NAIA-scholarship Spring Arbor in non-conference play starting at 4 p.m.
