ADRIAN, Mich.--For the next week, AdrianBulldogs.com will count down the top-10 stories from 2015 in Bulldogs Athletics. Thanks to our visitors for submitting nominations on our Facebook, Twitter pages and via email.
Our first entry is Men's Soccer avenging its worst loss of the season to Kalamazoo College. On Oct. 6 in Kalamazoo, the host Hornets pinned a 7-0 defeat after outshooting the Bulldogs 19 to 4 (11-1 SOG). But in the Oct. 31 season finale on Senior Day, Adrian upended a K-Zoo squad, 2-1, that secured the second seed in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship tournament.
After spotting the Hornets a 1-0 halftime lead, Adrian came from behind with two goals in the second half. In the 69th minute, Zachary Roller knotted the score with a blast from the top right corner of the box that the keeper got his hand on, but the ball bounced high over his head and trickled past the goal line. Then 11 minutes later, Brandon Katona scored the game-winner on a nice combination piece from Tad Davis and Ryan Kissel.
Senior keeper Lino Taormina made five saves in his final appearance and combined with an eight-save shutout performance at Olivet earlier in the week, he earned the last MIAA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week award of the season. Taormina ended the regular season as the MIAA statistical champion with 105 saves--one shy of his career high.
Playing most of the season with a starting lineup of eight freshmen and sophomores, Adrian ended up with a respectable 6-11-2 mark, including 5-8-1 for fifth place in the MIAA standings--just three points shy of a playoff berth.
