Equestrian Makes Impressive Season Debuts Under New Head Coach Jaclynn Gray

ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College equestrian team is off to a hot start under the direction of first-year head coach Jaclynn Gray, who has put an indelible stamp on the program already after taking the reins in late July. To kick off the 2015-16 season, both the hunt and stock seats set school records for the best starts in Adrian history.

Hunt seat opened its season at Grand Valley State University at the Woodbine Equestrian Center in Chelsea for a doubleheader on Oct. 3.

Stock Seat set a record for bringing home the most first-place wins--a total of four, led by sophomore Rachel Kanaziz with two--in its season-opening show on Oct. 10 hosted by Saginaw Valley State University in Midland.

Hunt Seat set another record at its second show on Oct. 11 versus Western Michigan University at Mystic Marsh Farm in Delton for ending up fifth overall. That represents the highest ranking at a show in program history. Sophomore Morgan Leja had a first-place ribbon in over the fences competition, and freshman Madelyn Losier was runner-up in both over the fences and on the flat.

As a result, Hunt Seat is currently ranked fifth in Intercollegiate Horse Show Association, Zone 6, Region 4. And Stock Seat finished sixth overall at the last meet at Ferris State University on Saturday. Both marks represent the highest places in school history on both sides.

Against Ferris State, Kanaziz turned in another first-place in the morning show while freshmen Joleen Cejmer, Kelsey Suiter also had No. 1 finishes in the afternoon show.

"This team has come in preseason practices and started with momentum, which has successfully carried into the show pen," Gray said. "My goal for this team this season is to be effective in the show pen, learn to make adjustments while in the show pen to finish their ride strong and show that horse to the best of their ability. I am excited to continue this season; we can only get better and continue it work hard as a team."
