Bulldogs Equestrian Continues to Make History at Grand Valley State University Stock Show
AUGUSTA, Mich.--The Adrian College equestrian program added to its historic season at the Grand Valley State University Stock Show here at the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center over the weekend. The Bulldogs earned four first-place ribbons, another high-point rider award and more student-athletes qualified for regional competition.
All nine athletes that started showing at the beginning of the season have successfully qualified for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Stock Regionals (Feb. 4-5) at Michigan State University. This is the first time in school history that the team has achieved this feat. Just two team members did not qualify, but they joined the team half-way through the season and were only able to compete at a reduced number of shows.
In the morning show at GVSU, senior Rachel Kanaziz led the way with a win in reining and second place in horsemanship, qualifying for another ride-off which eventually led her to earning the high point rider title multiple times this season. The other reiner and horsemanship rider, classmate Kelsey Suiter, placed third in both of her morning classes, netting a spot in the regional show. Freshman Skylar Scribner placed fourth in open horsemanship, alongside senior Christina Bitson who placed seventh. In the novice division, freshmen Michaela Carnevale and Montana Whitehead placed second and third, respectively. For the Intermediate II division, freshman Rebekah Wright earned fifth, sophomore Morgan Langworthy took home sixth, and sophomore Alana Pastula was third.
For the afternoon show, Kanaziz won her horsemanship class and placed third in reining. Suiter placed third in horsemanship and won her reining class. Scribner finished the day fifth, while Bitson took home another seventh place. Carnevale placed seventh, Whitehead second. Wright won her division, qualifying for the first regional show of her career. Langworthy placed sixth. Senior Morgan Petriko was third in her class and punched her ticket to the regional show. Pastula had a tremendous ride and rode home with a fifth-place.
Overall, the team was fourth after the morning standings and fifth in the afternoon meet. Team members showed significant improvement over the course of the season and all demonstrated strong finishes at the last regular-season stock show.
Sights are now set on the IHSA regional meet with high hopes of additional advancement to Nationals.
The following Bulldog student-athletes have qualified for stock regionals in each division:
Bitson, Advanced; Carnevale, Intermediate; Kanaziz, Open Horsemanship and Reining; Langworthy, Walk Trot; Petriko, Intermediate; Scribner, Advanced; Suiter, Open Horsemanship and Reining; Whitehead, Intermediate; and Wright, Intermediate.
