Figure Skating Earns Back-to-Back Midwestern Conference Championship and Berth to Nationals

McFARLAND, Wis. -- Adrian College's intercollegiate skating team again busted their all-time team high score and earned 134 points for a first-place finish at the 2014 Skate on Wisconsin competition on Sunday (Mar. 9) hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The Bulldogs defeated Wisconsin (56.5), Michigan (50), Miami (47.5), Northern Michigan (24), Oakland (24), Michigan State (20), Marquette (20), and Bowling Green (17). The Adrian squad ran away with the title; their performances taking them 77.5 points ahead of the rest of the pack.

Adrian College has now won five consecutive Midwestern Conference competitions, including back-to-back Midwestern Conference Championships, and has clinched a berth to the 2014 U.S. Intercollegiate Team Skating Championships.

"We are honored and humbled by the whole experience," head coach Ashley Carlson expressed. "We want to give thanks to the college and our athletic department for the opportunity to show what a fully-funded, varsity figure skating team can accomplish. We will do that by putting our heads down, training hard, and leaving everything out on the ice at nationals."

Highlights of the competition include a first-place finish in the following 13 events: Preliminary Freeskate (Maddie Sena), Pre-Juvenile Freeskate (Barbara Hipp), Juvenile Freeskate (Raynise Mancha), Novice Freeskate (Meghan Barnes), Junior Freeskate (Miranda Micallef), Junior Championship Freeskate (India Johnson), Novice Short (Emily Young), Junior Short (Miranda Micallef), Senior Short (Tricia DeFelice), Preliminary Dance (Raynise Mancha), International Dance (Tricia DeFelice), Low Team Maneuver and Intermediate Team Maneuver.

The highest point-earners for the team were India Johnson (18) and co-captain Tricia DeFelice (19).

"Winning an event means so much more to me when I know I am contributing to the team's overall success," Johnson explained, "and when my teammates are just as excited for me in return, it is the most rewarding feeling. We can always count on each other for support, no matter what."

The team has officially qualified for a repeat appearance at the U.S. Intercollegiate Team Skating Championships in April. The three colleges/universities with the most points throughout the season in each conference (Pacific Coast, Midwestern, and Eastern) are invited to compete at the U.S. Intercollegiate Team Skating Championships. Entries from the Pacific Coast include UC Berkley, UCLA, and Denver. Entries from the Midwest are Michigan, Miami, and Adrian. Entries from the East Coast will be determined at Delaware on March 23, 2014. With Sunday's victory, Adrian will enter into the event as the Midwest's highest hopes for claiming a national title.

To see the Bulldogs in action on home ice, mark your calendars for April 12-13, 2014, as the U.S. Intercollegiate Team Skating Championships are held at Arrington Ice Arena on Adrian College's campus. Admission is free and open to the public.
