ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team celebrated senior night in grand fashion on Thursday, as the Bulldogs downed the Calvin Knights 6-0 in the first American Collegiate Hockey Association meeting between the two schools.
After pregame ceremonies to honor six graduating seniors, the contest got off to a slow start, as the only first period goal was a power play goal scored by Adrian's Joe Costello, with assists from Marcus Rose and Marcel Kottek.
Adrian got their offense cranked up in the second period, however, scoring three times to take a commanding 4-0 advantage. Rose struck first for the Bulldogs just a little over five minutes into the period, and was followed by goals from Brad Kobryn and Mike Finger.
Kobryn scored his second goal of the night to start the third period scoring with 9:26 remaining in the game, giving him thirty goals for the season, putting him in third place nationally, just four goals behind leader Pavel Nayda of Mercyhurst University, who has compiled 34 goals this season.
Adrian's final goal of the game came on a blast from the left point by defenseman Jordan Oshowy, which may its way past a host of defenders and eluded Calvin net minder Alex Gross to make the final 6-0.
Senior Austyn Roudebush (Toledo, Ohio) treated himself to the shutout on senior night, turning away all of the Knights offerings, as the Bulldogs allowed just 10 shots on goal in the game. Gross made forty saves for Calvin, as the Bulldogs outshot the Knights by a 46-10 margin.
Marcel Kottek finished the evening with three assists, while Kobryn and Rose each had a pair of helpers to go along with their goals.
In addition to Roudebush, the Bulldogs honored their five other seniors, which include Josh Hosking (Oxford,Mich.), Archie McKinnon (Rossland, British Columbia), Zach Armstrong (Finlay, Ohio), Justin Fisher (Flushing,Mich.), and Brad Kobryn (Hamilton,Ontario). The group has an impressive list of accomplishments, including three regular season Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League regular season championships, one playoff title and four national tournament appearances, including last year's trip to the ACHA Division l Final Four.
Game 2 of the Calvin series was slated for Friday in Grand Rapids, but has been postponed and is tentatively rescheduled for Saturday at 3:00 p.m. due to the poor weather conditions across Lower Michigan. The Bulldogs who are now 22-1 having won their last ten in a row, will travel to Mercyhurst University in Erie Pennsylvania next weekend before competing in the GLCHL tournament in Ann Arbor on the 23rd, 22th, and 25th of February. Adrian will have one final home game on March 1, when they tangle with NAIA Indiana Tech before heading to the National tournament in Columbus, Ohio, on March 8.
