ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian College baseball team will enter the 2012 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional on Wednesday, May 16 with a great deal of momentum after a convincing run through the 2012 MIAA Tournament. The Bulldogs outscored their three conference tournament opponents by a 28-6 margin including a 17-2 win over Hope College in the tournament final on Friday, May 11. It was the first-ever MIAA Tournament with the automatic bid going to the champion. The Bulldogs (35-8) also won the regular season title with a 24-4 record. It will be the fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance for Adrian and the third straight trip to Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.
The Bulldogs will be the third-seed in the upcoming Mideast Regional and will face sixth-seeded College of Wooster (27-16). The Fighting Scots finished tied for third (11-5) in the North Coast Athletic Conference during the regular season and earned the NCAC automatic bid by winning the conference tournament. Wooster defeated DePauw (4-1) and Ohio Wesleyan (6-2) in the first two games and then fell to DePauw (6-3) setting up a winner-take-all championship game. The Fighting Scots scored an 8-6 win over the Tigers in Chillicothe, Ohio to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The Bulldogs and Fighting Scots have played five times with Wooster winning four of those contests. The teams squared off in a doubleheader in 1989 and most recently have played each other three times in the NCAA Regionals. Wooster won 12-1 back on May 19, 2005 in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Bulldogs won 4-3 on May 14, 2008 en route to their Mideast Regional championship in Terre Haute. The last meeting was at Nicolay Field during the 2009 Mideast Regional as Wooster prevailed 8-2 back on May 17, 2009.
The Bulldogs have played just one game against the NCAA Tournament field of 56 teams this season. Adrian faced Christopher Newport, number one seed in the South Region, back on February 27 on a neutral field in Demorest, Georgia. Adrian won 3-1 behind a complete-game effort from senior Jason Fryman. The righty fired nine innings of three-hit ball and allowed one earned run with no walks and seven punchouts. Mitch Stefanski, Mike Herzog and Garrett Green each had an RBI in the contest. Stefanski and R.J. Rios each had a pair of hits including a double for Stefanski.
The Adrian pitching staff has been a story all season and performed at a top-notch level in the conference tournament. The Bulldogs' team ERA was 1.33 allowing four earned runs in 27 innings. Fryman threw nine innings and allowed four hits in a 2-0 shutout over Albion on Wednesday, May 9. Eric Schmidt also went six strong innings in the title game against Hope yielding seven hits and one earned run with a strikeout. On the offensive side, Adrian batted .355 in the three games. Herzog led the team going 6-for-12 with two runs, a double, a triple and two RBI's. Green batted .455 (5-for-11) with five runs scored and four RBI's. Sam Fischer batted .429 (6-for-14) with three runs scored, one home run and two RBI's. Stefanski led the squad with five runs driven in and also hit .375 (3-for-8).
