ADRIAN, Mich. – Friday was a microcosm of two different games for the Adrian College baseball team as they played a hard-fought 3-2 win in game one and then cruised to a 9-0 win in the nightcap over Alma College (4-7, 0-2).
The Bulldogs faced Jose Velez in game one and the lefty from Tampa, Florida kept the Bulldogs off-balance in a six-inning outing. Velez allowed just three hits and walked three, but struck out 11 including seven of the first nine hitters. Alma scored twice in the second inning against Adrian starter Cory Fox as Roddy MacNeil had a two-out RBI bunt single and then Ryan Henris had an infield single later in the inning to score MacNeil.
Fox kept Alma off the board for the final five innings and scattered 10 hits in a complete game effort. He walked two and struck out one in a 112-pitch outing with 71 strikes. Fox improved to 2-0 this season with an ERA of 1.55.
Adrian scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning. Andrew DeLuca and Sam Fischer drew back-to-back walks with one out and Dan Heatherly stepped to the plate in a 1-for-18 slump since coming back from spring break and hit a huge two-run double down the left field line to tie the game at 2-2. Jamey Sackett followed with a RBI single down the right field line to score Heatherly with the winning run.
Alma put two men on base in the seventh at first and second, but Fox got Jose Rosado to hit a foul pop to first to end the game and give Adrian their first conference win of the season.
Brent Greenwood drew the starting assignment in game two and threw a shutout against the Scots. Greenwood improved to 1-0 and allowed five hits with no walks and three strikeouts. He needed just 86 pitches in seven innings and got all the offense he needed when the Bulldogs scored four times in the second. Adrian also added a single run in the third and two runs each in the fifth and sixth.
Colin Nash allowed five hits and five earned runs for the Scots to get the loss. Blake Ordiway threw one inning and allowed three hits and two earned runs with a walk. Sackett had a solid game two going 3-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored. Zach Kolvey had one base hit and two RBI's as the designated hitter. Heatherly reached base three times in game two with a double and two walks. Cody Meyer went 2-for-3 in the nine-hole with two runs scored and a RBI.
