GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Adrian College baseball team headed into their Monday showdown at Calvin with a few questions about their consistency. For one afternoon though they put together their most complete doubleheader of the season with a 7-0 and 9-1 decision against the Knights. Both teams headed into the games tied for second place in the MIAA and the Bulldogs climbed back into a first-place tie with Hope at 11-5 at the end of the day.
Holden Branch continued his rise with a six-inning masterpiece in game 1 to improve to 4-1 this season. Branch walked four and struck out four and got plenty of run support. Garrett Green had a breakout performance going 2-for-4 at the plate with his fifth double and first home run of the season. He scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Anthony Sergi kept hitting the ball with regularity going 3-for-4 with two doubles (3,4) and two RBI's. Dan Heatherly continued his hot streak with his third home run of the season. Jamey Sackett collected his fifth double of the season and scored a run in game 1.
Adrian scored four runs in the third inning in game 2 and never looked back in a 9-1 victory. Calvin did not score its run until the seventh inning. Eric Schmidt got back on track to pick up his second win of the season. Schmidt tossed six innings of scoreless ball allowing five hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Sam Fischer snapped out of a mini-slump with two doubles in three at-bats with an RBI. Andrew DeLuca was inserted into the leadoff spot and responded by going 3-for-4 with his fifth double of the season and two runs scored. Green and Sergi each had a double in game 2 as Sergi went 2-for-4. Seven different Bulldogs had one RBI in game 2.
