Bulldogs Sweep Franklin in Twinbill

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Adrian College baseball team had a change of venue on Saturday as their home opener was moved to Franklin due to weather in Michigan. The Bulldogs improved to 4-3 overall and have won three straight after a 15-6 game one win and 10-9 game two win in 10 innings.

Senior Sam Fischer was the hitting hero in game one going 3-for-5 with a grand slam in the ninth and collecting six RBI. Fischer also had a double in the contest and scored twice. It was Fischer's first home run of the season and his fourth double. Eric Schmidt drew the start and went five innings improving to 2-0 this season. He walked three and struck out five while allowing five hits and two earned runs. Adrian led 3-0 before the Griz scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. Adrian increased their lead to 7-2 with two runs in the sixth and seventh. Franklin cut the lead down to 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth, but Adrian scored eight times in the ninth to put the game away.

Brent Greenwood threw three innings in relief and gave up one earned run with two walks and four strikeouts. Greg Sombati threw in the ninth and gave up one run on one hit with one strikeout. R.J. Rios drove in a pair of runs for the Bulldogs going 2-for-4 with two doubles.

In game two it was Franklin jumping out to a 5-1 lead after two innings. Rylie Robinson kept his team in it with four scoreless innings after a four-run second. Robinson finished with no decision going six innings and allowing nine hits. He struck out seven and yielded seven earned runs. Holden Branch got the win throwing the final four innings. He allowed just two hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Adrian hung seven runs in the fifth to make it 9-5 and then Franklin scored four in the bottom of the seventh to tie it at 9-9.

Drew Shutes played hero in the 10th inning with a two-out RBI double scoring Fischer with the winning run. Shutes went 2-for-6 with three RBI in the nightcap. Fischer scored three times while Ryan Dorow got the start at shortstop and went 3-for-6 with two RBI in the two-hole. John Joseph drove in a pair of runs batting ninth. Rios went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI and Dan Heatherly also collected two hits including a double. Adrian had six doubles in the nightcap and eight singles.
