Pitching Stout in Sweep of Olivet

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College baseball team played the first two games of a weekend series against Olivet College at Nicolay Field as the visiting team when Olivet's field was not playable this weekend. The Bulldogs took advantage of the home venue with a pair of wins over the Comets by scores of 5-2 and 2-1 to improve to 11-5 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA.

The Bulldog pitching staff had been maligned after previous seasons which saw them finish among the nation's best. The team has started to turn things around and lowered their earned run average to 4.39 after allowing three earned runs on the day.

Junior righty Eric Schmidt improved to 4-0 this season and lowered his season earned run average to 2.35 with a six-inning performance in game one. He allowed six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Schmidt now has 29 strikeouts this season already surpassing last year's total of 26. Sophomore Tommy Eng has become a viable option as a closer lately for the Bulldogs as he pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn his third save in the last six games.

Junior outfielder Drew Shutes went 2-for-4 with two RBI as he drove home a run in the third with an infield single and also in the fifth with a single up the middle. Freshman shortstop Ryan Dorow collected his ninth double, drew a walk and scored a run hitting second in the lineup. Dorow has made a huge impact on the team leading the Bulldogs with a .420 batting average (21-for-50). Mitch Stefanski went 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk.

Senior righty Rylie Robinson turned in one of the better starts of his career in game two limiting Olivet to two singles in the 2-1 victory. Robinson completed his first complete game of the season and 12th of his career to move to 3-0 on the mound and 19-5 in his career. He gave up one run in the first and then shut down the Comets with no hits over the last six innings and just two runners left on base. He walked three and struck out two.

Senior first baseman R.J. Rios recorded 11 putouts and went 2-for-3 at the plate. He is now batting .340 (18-for-53) this season. Stefanski recorded two hits in three at-bats and a RBI which came on a single to right field in the third. Dorow went 2-for-2 with a run and walk. Dan Heatherly broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Dorow with the winning run.

Adrian improved to 6-2 at home this season and will play two more at Nicolay Field tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Olivet.
