ADRIAN, Mich. – The much anticipated weekend series against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association co-leaders Adrian College and Hope College went to the 'Dogs on Friday afternoon as Adrian swept the Flying Dutchmen by scores of 13-7 and 14-3. Adrian improved to 15-5 overall and 9-1 in the MIAA by punishing the baseball to the tune of 27 runs and 33 hits, including 15 extra-base knocks in the doubleheader.
Hope jumped out to a 6-2 lead in game one heading into the bottom of the third, but were outscored 11-1 in the final four innings. The Flying Dutchmen got to Adrian starter Eric Schmidt for three runs in the second and third innings. Schmidt allowed six earned runs in those innings, but bounced back with three scoreless innings while his teammates were scoring runs in bunches. The Bulldogs erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 10-6 and then added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 13-6 lead into the seventh. Schmidt allowed a run in the seventh but improved to 5-0 allowing seven hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
Currey Thomas lasted just 3.1 innings for Hope and yielded 12 hits, eight earned runs and one walk falling to 3-2 on the mound. Eric Plaehn threw 1.2 innings allowing two hits and two earned runs. Kyle Barnaciak pitched one inning and gave up two unearned runs with two strikeouts. Mitch Stefanski had a monster game going 4-for-5 with four runs, two doubles, one triple and two RBI. Sam Fischer and Ryan Dorow both hit home runs as Fischer went yard for the fourth time this season and Dorow went to right center for his first of the year. Fischer, Dorow and Dan Heatherly each drove in two runs. R.J. Rios went 2-for-4 with a run and a team-high three RBI. Ben Yax collected his second double of the year and went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the ninth spot of the order.
Adrian went ahead 5-0 after two innings in game two and cruised to the 14-3 win. The Bulldogs scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn a 6-1 lead into a 14-1 advantage. Hope scored twice in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring. Rylie Robinson picked up the win for Adrian improving to 4-0. He threw a complete game allowing five hits with two earned runs, four walks and four strikeouts. Austin Goodyke tossed 5.1 innings and allowed 10 hits and four earned runs with a strikeout. Matt Chema threw 0.2 innings and allowed six unearned runs.
Stefanski missed the cycle in game one by one home run, but hit for the cycle on the day with his third home run of the season in his first at-bat in game two. He collected three RBI in the nightcap. Yax capped a great day going 2-for-2 with three RBI raising his season average to .346. Fischer went 4-for-5 with his second triple of the season and two runs scored. Braydon Gomes drove home two runs with a double. John Joseph also had a two-run double in the sixth inning. Rios collected his fifth double and went 2-for-4 with two runs. Zach Kolvey hit his first triple of the season going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
There was a schedule change announced at the conclusion of the games that Hope will play two more games in Adrian at Nicolay Field tomorrow at noon because Boeve Stadium was ruled unplayable. The Flying Dutchmen will be the home team in both games and it marks the third straight conference series that Adrian will play all four games on home turf.
