ALMA, Mich. - The Adrian College pitchers had the strikeouts rolling and the offense put together a couple of late runs in a 5-3 road win at Alma College on Saturday. The second game of the doubleheader saw Adrian take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning and then the game was postponed due to rain. The Bulldogs and Scots will conclude that game at Nicolay Field tomorrow at 1 p.m. and will then play the scheduled doubleheader between the two teams.
Adrian (17-7, 11-2) increased their conference lead to three games with the two-run win in game one. Junior Eric Schmidt improved to 6-0 on the mound and struck out nine Scots in six innings. Sophomore Tommy Eng earned his fourth save of the season in the seventh inning with no hits, one walk and one strikeout. Philip Jock came in relief for the starter Kevin Thompson for Alma and took the loss giving up the two runs in the sixth although just one was earned.
The heart of the order showed why they are holding down those spots in the order. Mitch Stefanski went 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI including his seventh double. Drew Shutes went 3-for-4 with three singles in the cleanup spot with a run and RBI. Dan Heatherly collected his first multiple-hit game since March 26 at Earlham going 2-for-4 with a RBI. Sam Fischer reached base twice with a single and walk and stole his team-leading sixth base of the season. Zach Kolvey also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly which was his first of the season.
