ADRIAN, Mich. – The Bulldogs ended their regular season Saturday afternoon as they finished their weekend series with the Calvin College Knights. Adrian had hot bats in game one as they took down Calvin 13-4 before falling to the Knights in game two, 5-4. This leaves the Bulldogs at 27-13 overall and 21-7 in the MIAA.
Game one saw the Bulldogs come out hot with their bats as they totaled 13 runs on 15 hits. The Bulldogs opened up this gaping lead with an eight-run fourth inning. Adrian was up 13-1 after four before the Knights tacked on three runs in the sixth inning as the Bulldogs cruised to a 13-4 win.
Adrian had seven batters tally multiple hit games. Jeff Gertly went 2-3 with one RBI and three runs scored. Tommy Eng went 2-4 with three RBI and one run scored and Travis Potter went 2-5 with three RBI to lead the Bulldog offense.
Holden Branch (7-0) earned the win on the mound for the Bulldogs as he pitched four innings and allowed one run. Jordan Frayer pitched a scoreless fifth with one strike out, Shane Healy pitched the sixth and Austin Buchmayer pitched a scoreless seventh with three strikeouts.
Game two saw a close battle between the two teams. The Knights took the early 2-0 lead after one. The Bulldogs then cut the Calvin lead to 2-1 in the second as Dakota Cararo singled in R.J. Rios. Adrian kept this momentum into the fourth as they took the lead from Calvin with two runs. Ben Yax singled in R.J. Rios and Travis Potter singled up the middle to score Yax. The Knights answered in the top of the fifth with three runs to leave the score at 5-3 in favor of Calvin. The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the inning as R.J. Rios singled to left to score Drew Shutes to cut the lead to 5-4. This was end of the scoring as Calvin hung on to their lead through the remaining two innings and the Bulldogs fell, 5-4.
Greg Sombati made the start on the mound for the Bulldogs as he pitched four innings, allowed two runs and struck out five. Jordan Frayer pitched the fifth while allowing three runs. Zach Ranney pitched a scoreless sixth and Josh Richardson pitched the seventh inning and did not allow a run.
R.J. Rios went 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Ben Yax went 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Travis Potter went 2-4 with an RBI.
The Bulldogs will see action again in the MIAA tournament that is set to begin Wednesday, May 7.
