ADRIAN, Mich. - Junior outfielder Jeff Gertley had a monster day at the plate and junior reliever Tommy Eng closed the door in the ninth as Adrian (32-10) picked up a 6-5 win over Hope in a winner's bracket game at the MIAA Tournament.
Gertley hit a pair of home runs including a grand slam in the third inning and a solo shot in the fifth for a career-high five RBI. Eng was the third pitcher of the game for Adrian and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the season.
Adrian led 6-0 after four and a half innings but the Flying Dutchmen clawed back into the game with three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Jordan Frayer was staked to a comfortable lead and improved to 7-1 this season. He threw 6.1 innings and allowed five hits, two earned runs and two walks with five strikeouts. Collin Korte went 1.2 innings and allowed two more earned runs to make things interesting.
Jake Chipka took the loss (5-3) going four innings and allowing all six runs. Eric Plaehn was good in relief with 4.2 scoreless innings and a strikeout. Matt Glowacki recorded the final out in the top of the ninth with a bases-loaded strikeout to keep the game close heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Ryan Dorow hit his 10th home run of the season in the first inning to move into a tie for second in a season at Adrian. Dorow scored twice and walked two more times. Drew Shutes went 2-for-5 with his 12th double of the season. Adrian will now play in the championship game tomorrow at noon.
