BLOOMINGTON, Minn.--D3baseball.com has selected Adrian College sophomore Tommy Parsons (New Albany, Ohio) as one of three starting pitchers to its national team of the week. That announcement came late Monday from the organization's website that specializes in NCAA Division III baseball coverage.
Less than 24 hours ago, Parsons was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. (He also won the weekly award on March 8.) Parsons was the only MIAA student-athlete chosen by D3basebal.com.
The right-hander tossed a no-hitter at home against Olivet College in the second game of a MIAA doubleheader on Friday, shutting down the Comets 8-0. Parsons struck out seven Comets while facing just two over the minimum 27 batters, completing the feat in just 88 pitches as 62 went for strikes. After walking the second batter of the contest, he retired the next 19 batters he faced before a Bulldog throwing error in the seventh inning.
It's the first no-hitter in the Craig Rainey 23-year coaching era, second in school history since Eric Davis in the 1970, and the fourth thrown in NCAA Division III this season.
Currently, Parsons tops the MIAA with 22 strikeouts, 31-2/3 innings pitched and wins (3-1). Opponents are batting just .196 against him and he has compiled a 2.84 earned-run average in five appearances. He also has been credited with the only shutout in the MIAA this spring.
The business management major becomes the third Bulldog this spring to be honored on the D3baseball.com Team of the Week, including junior first baseman Miccoy Drzewiecki on March 22 and junior shortstop Ryan Dorow on March 8.
